Events: The metaverse, gaming and the metabolism of cities

June 11, 2019 @ 18:00 - 20:00 SAST

Free

The recent drought in Cape Town taught me that as experts, we are terrible at making complex things understandable to the public. We are terrible at giving good advice; simple, quick actions to take in a crisis, that we feel also helps with the big picture.

Worst of all we don’t contribute to the conversation that builds the trust that we need to draw from in times of crisis.

In an effort to find a way to do exactly that, I am trying to combine the joy of gaming, the beauty of information visualisation and the rigour of urban metabolism studies.

I will be giving a few talks around this topic, showing what I have found and done so far, and asking for help.

The braindump of rough notes is here for the impatient or helpful 🙂

The first event is the Cape Linux User Group (CLUG) community on 11 June 2019 in Cape Town.

The second event is the Southern African Geography Teachers’ Association (SAGTA) conference on 21 June 2019 in Pretoria, Gauteng.

Lastly I intend to spend my Debian Conference and DebCamp on this topic from 14 to 28 July 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil.

I’ll include the talk content links here once they’re done. In the mean time, some musings at the links below:

Augmented reality city game for citizen scientists

Magicverse and urban resilience

Water and the Metaverse
