World-building the real world. Part 1: The (personal) WHY.

This post was inspired by Christoff Beddow’s post “From Map Making to World Building“

I’ve been wracking my brain how to combat misinformation, how to get people to understand the incredibly (even to professionals) complex interplay of natural resource management, guiding people to take responsible action in the face of climate change, true sustainability, … I acknowledge, accept and embrace that it takes time. We need to complicate the narrative, give people time to play with the data in a way that is accessible, engaging, fun. But how?! I think 3D is critical, there is just too much to convey on a single plane. My short hand for what I want to create is the metaverse. Our working project name is peduncle, and Siri made a beautiful logo for it!

The promise of the metaverse – or virtual worlds – for Africa

Consider this. I am from Africa, and I want to attend a conference, gain knowledge from peers in an area of my interest. Let’s set aside the massive costs and bureaucracy to get there, for the moment. I get there, and I am completely out of my depth. (I am white and a fluent English speaker with only a slight accent. But this was still a problem for me. So this is a very real example.)

Categorising the metaverse

Or, more accurately, categorising projects that contribute to the metaverse.

We’re building a metaverse thing called Peduncle, and I had to come to terms what it is we’re building, and why. Much of this was by looking at what others were doing and feeling that this is not what we’re building, and/or, I don’t want this, and then figuring out why I felt this way. From my experience, the media excitement mainly focuses on three aspects: digital twins, crypto and ‘the new internet’, and these often gets conflated. This led me to think of the metaverse as having three layers:

Walking copper equine statues and a treasure hunter

A delightful dream I had on 23 September 2022.

I’m on anti-anxiety medication (Setraline 50mg daily, not much but it keeps me from sliding into non-functionality), and I don’t know if it’s the meds or a healthy imagination but I have amazing dreams! Complete plots, like a movie, start to finish, mostly hanging together and mostly just really nice, not confusing or scary. They’re so cool I thought I should try document some of them, so here goes.
